Highway 61 Revisited
I look like a bum and I crawl like a snail
Brooksie, had coffee with Nishy and Dindo Sunday morning and taped their farewell to racing in America thoughts. It will have to wait because I am in a Audi Q7 TDI Euro spec test ride, heading home, doing Highway 61 at the moment, all the way to Memphis…..more

Marino Franchitti: Sebring, Spyders and Sunglasses
The initial excursion of this season’s ALMS opener at Sebring had it’s share of surprises. The Lion of Peugeot sending a four alarmer to the Audi squad that the game will be different at la Sarthe this year, the self destruction of the Maranello mounts and of course, the triumph of the Porsche LMP2’s claiming the top spots on the podium, overall!.......more

The Last Roar of the Lion
How often have we heard the phrase "larger than life" and believed it ? Usually labels such as that spring from publicists, pr agents and their ilk. So when one does meet an individual that truly is larger than life, you remember it. Such was Otis Chandler.......more

Otis was the force

Paul Frere: A Life Full of Cars
Paul Frere was without a doubt the single most important motoring writer of the post war era. Paul was a writer first and foremost, not a journalist. He set the standard for those that would later fill the pages of automotive magazines throughout the world. He was a man whose word, printed and otherwise, you could trust......more

Photographer of the Gods -  Keith Sutton on Developing the Past and Present
After Brooks’ last tour de photo, I decided that a visit with the man who has stamped his style on how the image of motorsport is viewed was in order. Keith Sutton was generous with his time and thoughtful with his answers. For a business and sport as unapproachable as F1, Sutton is one of the good guys.....more

McNish and Capello: Goodbye Baby and Amen!
Audi Sport is off to a good start this season despite the disappointment at not capturing another overall win at Sebring. Luhr and Werner have picked up the pace after it was announced that Allan McNish and Dindo Capello would be contesting the Le Mans Series and in effect, Sebring was the pairing’s farewell to racing in the U.S. ......more

Tony Dowe:  The Modern Alchemist
Most of our readers know who Tony Dowe is. A resume or C.V. as the Brits call it, that is way too impressive for most to acknowledge but certainly respect.  My favorite quote about TD comes from a certain Mr. Norbert Singer, perhaps you have heard of him, in his book 24:16, “Like I said, Tony Dowe is a clever man”........more

The iphone rollin’ and tumblin’ post Daytona test daze
Over the years of covering certain aspects of motorsport I have found the best time to talk shop with a major player is on the phone after the event. When they are on the way home or back to the shop to deal with the next batch of urgencies or are just waiting in the lounge at the airport. One of my favorites was Stefan Johannson years ago stuck in traffic and commenting “ Sure, I’m not going anywhere”.......more

Lowlander Lowdown: Allan McNish before the Drama
Another example of SCP indifference, or perhaps outdifference. No one in attendence at La Sarthe or keeping score at home could have predicted the dominance that was shown by the trio in R10 race number 2 for most of the race... and then the drama. The following went down after the test and just after the announcement that Tom Terrific was to return.......more

Henri Pescarolo:  Auteur
A hundred years ago a Renault ran around a makeshift layout near the
department of France known as La Sarthe. Later today a couple of diesels will lead a field of modern day chauffeurs and their petrol powered mounts
in what simply is referred to as Le Mans................more

my night at Maudes

Days of Steam
It's all there on page 16 of the factory drivers manual, unfortunately the text is in German. " Wenn der motor seine betriebstemperatur hat max. 80 wasserthemperatur sollte unbedingt darauf geachtet werden, dass bei standzeit der motor abgeschaltet wird, da anson die gefahr des uberhitzens besteht ". The manual I am referring to is for a 1981 Porsche 924 GTR that were made in limited numbers, .......more
